‘StumbleUpon’ a new social media craze!

POSTED BY prbythebook ON April 21, 2010

Today’s college interns speak in 140 character sentences, they are master texters, and they lead the charge when it comes to new platforms like Twitter. So who better to keep the rest of us up to speed on social media-land than our own crop of “digital natives”? Thank you University of Texas (and other great Texas institutions of higher learning who lend us their students for semester-long internships).

PR by the Book intern Cara Morgan recently shared with us the scoop on one of the newest players on the social media scene –StumbleUpon. Here’s what she had to say:

These days, everywhere you turn there is a new social media site (SMS) that is popping up and taking over the Internet. The latest SMS that is catching the attention of web surfers everywhere is a quirky website called StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon gives users the opportunity to find websites and articles that match their personal interests.

When someone signs up on StumbleUpon, they are asked to pick out interests from a long list that includes everything from astronomy to literature. After selecting their interests, users can click the “Stumble” button, which will direct them to a site that relates to one of their interests. From here, they can give the site a “thumbs up,” which will show more sites similar to the current site, or “thumbs down” if they do not want to see anymore sites like it. Members can share pages with friends or stumblers with common interests. The more a person stumbles, the more interesting sites are added to your list of favorites.

StumbleUpon is an innovative site that allows people to discover those sites that they might not find through a search engine. Instead of only coming across the most popular commercial sites like search engines, StumbleUpon reveals diamonds in the rough.

Sign up for StumbleUpon and see what you will stumble upon next!
