A first for PR By the Book: Booking a horse for interview!

POSTED BY tolly ON October 22, 2010

One of our dear authors, Lynn Reardon, is currently on tour to promote her book Beyond the Home Stretch, which shares real-life stories from LOPE (Lone Star Outreach to Place Ex-Racers). Lynn founded LOPE to help horses who had hung up their “racing shoes” to find homes with loving families, and with an event this weekend in Boerne, TX, Great Day SA featured one of LOPE’s horses, Lilly.

Stephanie Ridge, who booked this segment, pitched the event as a tie-in to the upcoming Disney film Secretariat, the true story about a racing underdog. (Under-horse?) Lynn wrote us to say she had already gotten several calls from the segment, which is the kind of thing a publicist loves to hear!

We’ve had quite a few authors on TV lately, such as Janice Van Dyck, author of Finding Frances. Check out her segment on Studio 10 in Tampa, Florida to see how she turns a tough topic (death, dying parents) turned into a terrific interview.  (We love those well-prepared hosts, too!  Great questions from their corner).

This month, Janice appeared twice on local TV, and once on national: the popular talk show Daytime. Now, remember that discussion we were having earlier this week about phone pitching?  Full disclosure: All three of those media placements happened as a result of the phone pitch / email follow-up combo!

Stephanie phone pitched Great Day SA, too, so this adds an important element to the phone pitch debate.  Namely?  For TV – especially local TV – phone pitching is still a working strategy.

Thanks to the terrific TV hosts we’ve worked with lately!  We appreciate the time you took to listen to our ideas, and the care you took in making these segments successful.

Where art thou, phone pitch?

Where art thou, phone pitch?

Oh, ye olde phone pitch. What a tricky animal are you.
Publicists, how many times have you had this phone pitch conversation?
You: “Hi! My name is ____, and I’m working with ___. I –”
Media: “Stop.”
You: “Eh, em … pardon me?”
Media: “I mean, can you email me?”
You: “Well, yes, I just wanted to let you know about [...]

Questioning old industry standards: Don Draper, social media, and you

The guys at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce might not be in trouble after all, thanks to a game-changing ad that Don Draper ran in The New York Times.
What happened on Sunday’s episode of Mad Men (“Blowing Smoke”) resonated with many of us in PR today: that is, the old agency model is broken. Lucky Strike [...]

The Scare Your Pants Off Club – Spooky Reads for October (& Poll!)

October is my favorite month for so many reasons. The Texas weather finally starts to cool, our great city of Austin hosts the ACL Festival, Texas Book Festival and various Oktoberfest celebrations, and college football is in high gear (go Horns!). But my favorite part of October is Halloween. Now, I am not a big [...]

Web Sightings: B&H title featured in Psychology Today

Over the past several months, we’ve had the pleasure of working with a parenting title from B&H Publishing Group called Modern Parents, Vintage Values. The authors, Sissy Goff and Melissa Trevathan, are both professional counselors and, through their publicity campaign, are sharing their advice with frustrated parents who ask, “How can I instill traditional values [...]
