Lit Crawl Austin, Litquake and Texas Book Festival Bring Comical Music Mayhem to East Sixth; April 24

POSTED BY prbythebook ON March 31, 2014

by Lit Crawl Austin, @LitCrawlATX

litcrawlatxLit Crawl Austin adds a major dose of humor to its programming this year, with a benefit performance of the West Coast comedy show, “Way Behind the Music.” Presented in partnership with San Francisco’s Litquake literary festival and the Texas Book Festival, this will be the show’s Texas debut.

The show features a notable lineup of comics, musicians and writers who take center stage to readfrom the hilariously odd music memoirs of “less sung” authors, like Justin Bieber, Flavor Flav, Dick Clark, Sammy Hagar, Liberace, George Jones, Tori Amos, Vince Neil and Backstreet Boy moms Denise McLean and Jane Carter, among others.

Proceeds benefit Lit Crawl Austin’s annual literary pub crawl through the East Sixth corridor. (On tap this year Saturday, October 26; time 7:30pm)

Who:   Guest readers include…

  • Carolyn Wonderland: Multiple award-winning blues vocalist, songwriter and musician, has performed with Imperial Monkeys, Sis DeVille, and the Austin Volunteer Orchestra.
  • Annie La Ganga: comic performer, star of the stage show “Surprise Annie,” and author of Stoners and Self-Appointed Saints.
  • Owen Edgerton: Author, performer, and screenwriter. Has been voted Austin’s favorite author in 2007, 2008 and 2010 by the readers of the Austin Chronicle.

When:   Thursday, April 24, 2014; 7 PM

Where:  The North Door, 502 Brushy St., Austin, TX

Tickets: $12 in advance; $15 at the door. Available online, at

About Way Behind the Music

Producer: Litquake co-founder Jack Boulware, who has sacrificed both taste and time in order to personally read over 100 of the worst and weirdest music autobiographies ever published. Hear Jack Boulware interviewed, here.

Host: Anthony Bedard, of the bands Hank IV and Icky Boyfriends, and longtime booker for San Francisco’s Hemlock Tavern music club, whose Folder Rock project of bizarre band pitch letters is coming to a bookstore near you. Watch Anthony Bedard host, here.

Past participants

Authors: Sylvie Simmons, Joel Selvin, Michelle Tea, Joshua Mohr
Comedians/Personalities: Julie Klausner, Tom Scharpling, Gaylord Fields, Beth Lisick, Parker Gibbs, Bucky Sinister

What I’m Reading: Making Happy

by Marika Flatt, @marikaflatt I’m a big fan of #1 New York Times Bestselling Authors, husband & wife team, the Parrotts. I’ve read several of their relationship/ marriage books over the years. I love their smooth, yet punchy, writing style. As anyone who is married knows, you have to commit to continuing education for a long-term marriage. The […]
