Three Ways to Use Visuals in Social Media Marketing

Over the past few years, digital marketers have seen the rising importance of visual content, which was later emphasized by the changes that occurred on nearly every major social network, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Videos, pictures and infographics have now taken more precedent as they become more powerful tools that help authors and brands communicate better with their audiences. According to Xerox, researchers found that colored visuals increase people’s willingness to read a piece of content by 80%! That’s an incredible difference that proves what most of us already know: people prefer to look at visually stimulating content.

So what are three ways to use visuals in Social Media Marketing? It starts with your own work.

  1. Use your own photos + videos

Visual Social Media relies heavily on “sharing”.  If you can provide original content for others to share, (that links back to a business, website, or product), then you have an advantage. Most social media consumers love to see personal content from the person they are following or reading about. It creates a relatable connection!

When using your own photos, you’ll want to make sure the photos are sized correctly for the platform, and make sure they are high quality, without being pixelated.

For videos, programs such as Animoto and Adobe Voice can quickly turn a story into a visually beautiful video or mini-movie. The programs are really cost effective for your business, with some packages starting at $8.

  1. Royalty-free stock photos

Any social media manager or content marketer knows that one of the toughest parts of the job is finding the perfect image to accompany a post. Images are one of the most important parts for engagement, but unless you’re willing to pay significant costs for access to a database, trying to find great free social media images can be incredibly time-consuming.

Thankfully sites such as Unsplash and Creative Commons allow you to copy, modify, distribute and use online photos for free, including commercial purposes, without asking permission from or providing attribution to the photographer. You can also use Death to Stock photography’s newsletter for access to previously inaccessible images.

  1. Create graphics using a tool like Canva

Canva is a tool used for creating colorful and visually appetizing graphics. Canva has a ton of easy-to-use features and functions so that virtually anyone can create a variety of content that gets shared.

Using tools such as Canva can really help you produce high-quality, engaging content while also producing the content consistently without having to hire a graphic designer.

Lastly, Canva can help you create a variety of content, including pre-sized social media image and header templates, marketing materials, documents, presentations, invitations and ads.

If none of those are what you need, Canva also lets you create your own custom works of art. The best part? Canva is continuing to add to their collection of content with new templates for eBooks and blog posts. You don’t have to be a professional designer to make use of their program to create great images for social media.

Remember: we live in a visual society. Adding images and videos to your social media accounts isn’t optional – it’s a necessity! In fact, Buffer reported that tweets with images received 150% more retweets than those without. Regardless of platform, content with a relevant image receives as much as 94% more views than content without a relevant image.

When you’re looking for ways to use visuals in social media marketing, don’t overthink it. Just remember that quality is always better than quantity, and go from there.
