A first for PR By the Book: Booking a horse for interview!

POSTED BY tolly ON October 22, 2010

One of our dear authors, Lynn Reardon, is currently on tour to promote her book Beyond the Home Stretch, which shares real-life stories from LOPE (Lone Star Outreach to Place Ex-Racers). Lynn founded LOPE to help horses who had hung up their “racing shoes” to find homes with loving families, and with an event this weekend in Boerne, TX, Great Day SA featured one of LOPE’s horses, Lilly.

Stephanie Ridge, who booked this segment, pitched the event as a tie-in to the upcoming Disney film Secretariat, the true story about a racing underdog. (Under-horse?) Lynn wrote us to say she had already gotten several calls from the segment, which is the kind of thing a publicist loves to hear!

We’ve had quite a few authors on TV lately, such as Janice Van Dyck, author of Finding Frances. Check out her segment on Studio 10 in Tampa, Florida to see how she turns a tough topic (death, dying parents) turned into a terrific interview.  (We love those well-prepared hosts, too!  Great questions from their corner).

This month, Janice appeared twice on local TV, and once on national: the popular talk show Daytime. Now, remember that discussion we were having earlier this week about phone pitching?  Full disclosure: All three of those media placements happened as a result of the phone pitch / email follow-up combo!

Stephanie phone pitched Great Day SA, too, so this adds an important element to the phone pitch debate.  Namely?  For TV – especially local TV – phone pitching is still a working strategy.

Thanks to the terrific TV hosts we’ve worked with lately!  We appreciate the time you took to listen to our ideas, and the care you took in making these segments successful.
