5 Ways to Help An Author You Love John Kremer

This Valentine’s Day, we’re all about sharing the love. Since we’re in the book industry, we figured now would be the perfect time to share a little love with the authors we know and love!

Want to help out a friend who is an author (or another favorite author of yours)? Here are some easy ways from John Kremer to help an author you love and give his or her career a boost.

If you’re an author, feel free to share this page with your family and friends so they can help out too! Chances are they’re looking for ways to do so, and this post can give a little guidance on how to jump in.

1. Buy the author’s book.

Make sure you snag a copy (or two), and encourage your friends to buy it as well!

This is the easiest way to help an author you love. Don’t wait for the holidays to buy a copy as a gift (unless you’re buying it for Valentine’s Day) because the sooner you buy, the more confidence you’ll inspire in your favorite author.

Also, the media and other decision makers choose a book based on the momentum the book inspires. The more sales at the beginning of the book’s life, the more attention it will get from key decision makers, the media, and consumers.

Not sure where to buy the book? Check out the indie bookstore nearest you to help generate buzz within your community. You can also buy the book from the author’s website or directly from the author (where the author probably makes the most money), but there’s no harm in buying it from Barnes & Noble or Amazon.

 Give the book to friends and family. The more, the merrier. Encourage the gift receivers to take action on the rest of this list as well.

2. Recommend the author’s book.

If you like the book, recommend it to your friends and family. Blog about it. Tweet a mini-review or mention. Share a note on Facebook. Pin the book via its page on or the author’s website.

Always be sure to review the book on,, GoodReads, LibraryThing, and other reader social networks and book sales sites. Write an honest review giving your authentic opinion, but be sure to add a note of praise somewhere in your review.

If you like a book, tell your friends. Always leave a review, and share about it on social media!

3. Help the author generate buzz.

If your friend is comfortable speaking, recommend your friend to your local groups to be a speaker. Maybe this is the Rotary Club, a local church, Friends of the Library, bookseller, garden club, school, etc.

If you know of any newspaper editors or reporters, magazine editors, radio producers or hosts, TV show hosts or producers, columnists, bloggers, etc., send them a copy of the book or a note about the author. Not sure what to say? Tell the author about your connection, and introduce him or her to your contacts!

4. Ask!

Ask the author how you can help him or her. You may have some talent, connection, or specialized knowledge that might be just the thing he needs. Or, on the flip side, he or she might just need some of your time to help pack and ship some books or make a few phone calls.

5. Recommend the book to your local libraries and bookstores.

Call your local libraries and book stores to ask them to buy the book. If the author is a friend from your area, be sure to let them know that it’s a local author!  Remember: Libraries often order copies of books based on the inquiries they receive for the book. If the library refuses to order the book, buy a copy and donate it to the library.

Bookstores also stock books based on demand. The more people who ask about a book, the more likely it is that the bookstore will stock the book! Get a few friends together and call the bookstore asking for the book over the course of a few days. Who knows? Maybe they’ll start ordering it if they realize demand is high!
