Case Study: Kid Crazy and the Kilowatt King by Claudio Sanchez

POSTED BY prbythebook ON October 17, 2017

Summary

Claudio Sanchez is the frontman for the band Coheed and Cambria, and the creator of several comic books, including the New York Times best-selling series The Amory Wars, and the critically acclaimed titles Translucid, Key of Z and Kill Audio, co-written with his wife, Chondra Echert. A project that started as a rock opera became Claudio’s first children’s book, Kid Crazy and the Kilowatt King.
In Kid Crazy and the Kilowatt King, Kid Crazy Carlson longs for adventure in the far-off and bustling City of Ever. His world changes when he meets a strange droid called Denunzio who warns Kid of the city’s grumpy Kilowatt King, a rude man who forces the citizens to sing for him.

Campaign

  • Claudio is well known amongst the Comic-Con circuit for his New York Times best-selling series of comic books, but wanted our assistance in breaking into parenting media with his first children’s book.

Claudio’s wife, Chondra, and son, Atlas, are fans of the Pout Pout Fish series, and found us through our work on a holiday blog tour for The Not Very Merry Pout-Pout Fish.

Results

  • Our goal of a robust blog tour resulted in “tour stops” on 30 parenting blogs and websites.
  • Only a rock star can come up with this marketing gold: Claudio Sanchez released a special limited edition of Kid Crazy and the Kilowatt King accompanied by a 7” Coke-bottle-green vinyl, which contained an original song inspired by the story, as well as his audiobook reading of Kid Crazy set to a musical soundscape. It sold out before the book was even released!
