Celebrating Texas Writer’s Month – Leila Levinson

POSTED BY babs ON May 10, 2011

Texas Writers Month is a month-long event in May where—you guessed it—Texas writers are celebrated. It began in 1994 as an effort to get local bookstores to feature their local authors more prominently. Since then, it has evolved into a celebration that unites the entire literary community with multiple events that take place all over the entire state.

PR by the Book has decided to use the month of May to highlight the wide variety of Texas writers that comprise our sparkling clients.

Leila Levinson

When Leila Levinson, founder of the website VeteransChildren.com, discovered her father’s trunk of horrifying photos from a Nazi concentration camp, she realized the immense grief he carried his whole adult life. As a WWII surgeon and concentration camp liberator, he saw things that damaged him forever – things he never knew how to express, which crippled his relationship with his children.

The discovery inspired Leila to write Gated Grief: The Daughter of a GI Camp Liberator Discovers a Legacy of Trauma (Cable Publishing, January 2011).  Part memoir, part story collection, she interviewed over 70 veterans and their families for this book, to examine the way trauma wreaks hidden havoc over generations.

Just released this Spring, the book was received with astounding praise and has already been featured on CNN, on AARP Radio, KUT Radio, in the Austin American-Statesman, Huffington Post, and much more.

Leila is currently on a national speaking tour to bring attention to PTSD, and to offer healing interventions that stop the cycle of suffering.
