Frequently Asked Questions

When should I begin a publicity campaign?
The ideal time to begin a publicity campaign is 2-3 months prior to your book's publication date or product launch. This schedule gives enough time to prepare press materials, get them edited, build media lists and distribute press materials prior to the ideal time for you to be conducting interviews. However, many clients begin 1 month prior to a launch or even after a product/ book is on the market.

If I have a publisher, how do you work with them?
PR by the Book, LLC has a great deal of experience in working with a publishing house and complementing the efforts of the in-house team. Our team coordinates publicity work with the publisher's team so that the "right hand knows what the left hand is doing". This is always a very seamless process and the publisher is always very appreciative of the publicity generated.

How many books should I hope to sell?
The average first-time author (self-published or with a small publisher) sells approximately 5,000 books. Publicity is designed to spur consumer sales; however, PR by the Book, LLC will not make any guesses on how many books you will sell. There are many variables at stake in this scenario, including how successful you are at being interviewed.

How many interviews/ reviews will I get?
Again, we can make no guarantees on media coverage since that is out of our control. However, if we agree to represent you, you can be assured that our team will work diligently to secure a steady stream of media coverage for you and your product/ event/ concept. Variables outside of our control include: what's happening in or controlling the news; the attitudes and likes/dislikes of the media; how good you are at being interviewed; what else is on the market competing for the same coverage. Having said that, we have a great deal of experience in creatively pitching to the media and have developed very good relationships with media representatives, which results in media exposure for our clients.

How do I submit my book/ product for publicity representation?
The first step is to email Marika Flatt your information, including details about yourself and your product so she can get an idea of what the campaign would entail. All potential clients are reviewed based on a vision for a successful publicity campaign. Not everyone will be a good fit with PR by the Book, LLC and vice versa. All books/ materials are reviewed prior to accepting a client. After we agree that you and PR by the Book, LLC are a good fit, you will receive a proposal/ contract via email and are given a 14-day window to sign while your space is held. Depending on the client load at the time, you will be told when the first-available month is for your promotion.

What are your fees/ pricing?
Full scale media campaigns are charged monthly retainers and a la carte services are offered at an hourly rate.  Contact PR by the Book, LLC for details.
