Favorite mom/child reads for Mother’s Day

POSTED BY elaine ON May 7, 2010

Have you read a book with your mom today? If you’re any older than say, about 12, the answer is probably no. But for young children, the answer is often a resounding – yes! In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, here is a list of some of our favorite children’s book titles for moms to read with their budding book worms. Enjoy!

U.N.I.Q.U.E. KIDS: Growing my Leadership Garden by Debra Slover – Written as a classic fable, this Mom’s Choice Award winner is an illustrated book that shows children how to plant and nurture the seeds of good leadership while ridding their metaphorical gardens of the “weeds” (negative qualities that can harm children’s self-esteem). Empowering kids to feel good about themselves? We like it!

Staying with the garden and spring theme, Carol Zelaya wrote an adorable 3-book series for children called Emily the Chickadee that helps children appreciate the beauty of nature. Inspired by a chickadee Carol would watch at her home in Oregon, the series illustrates how nests are made, eggs are hatched into birds, how the mother bird feeds her young and how children can care for birds and other animals.

Book clubs are taking the country by storm, especially mother-daughter book clubs. A popular selection for just such a group is The Hole in the Sky by Barbara Mahler. This beautiful hardback book for readers ages 8-13 is a fantasy novel about 13-year-old Kaela who finds a mysterious butterfly pendant and her mother’s old diary and then embarks on a fantastical journey to a beautiful, but cursed, land. The key that unlocks the curse lies in Kaela overcoming her grief over her mother’s recent death and facing her deepest fears.

A child falling victim to bullying is one of the most heart-wrenching situations a mom can imagine. Whether your child has been bullied or not, Janet Heller’s How the Moon Regained Her Shape, inspired by Native American Folklore, is a beautiful tool for moms to use in talking to their children about bullying. In the story, the once proud moon finds herself shrinking after she becomes the target of the sun’s malicious insults. With a little reminder from a friend of how much she is loved, the moon…regains her shape!

Last, but absolutely not least, author Ann Purmell has 3 of the most beautifully done hardback children’s books that celebrate the spirit of family-run businesses. Christmas Tree Farm, Apple Cider Making Days and Maple Syrup Season each celebrates a hard-working family providing a service for their community. These books give the idea of shopping locally a very Norman Rockwell feel.

Happy Mother’s Day, Moms! Take some extra time this weekend to read with your kids. They’ll thank you for it!

Elaine, thank you so much! Is that a photo of you reading to your little girl? I am honored that you have chosen my books among your mother’s day favorites! Have a great Mother’s Day!

Dear Elaine & Marika,

Thank you so much for mentioning my award-winning book about bullying, How the Moon Regained Her Shape, on your website. I had a great recent trip to Petoskey, Michigan, where I read my book and did creative writing workshops in the elementary schools. I also autographed my book for McLean & Eakin booksellers in Petoskey.

Best wishes! Janet

Carol, no, that’s not me. Replace the little girl with 2 little boys fighting over my head with Star Wars light sabers, and then it would be more accurate! :) Just a stock photo!
Hope your Mother’s Day was great!
