ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Jeffrey Bennett holds a B.A. in Biophysics (University of California, San Diego) and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Astrophysics (University of Colorado). His extensive educational experience includes teaching at every level from preschool through graduate school, proposing and helping to develop the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, DC, creating the first broad-based curriculum for courses in quantitative reasoning, and serving two years as a Visiting Senior Scientist at NASA Headquarters, where he helped create numerous programs designed to build stronger links between the research and education communities.

Dr. Bennett is the lead author of college textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics that together have sold more than 1.5 million copies, and of numerous critically acclaimed books for the general public, for children, and for educators. He has received numerous awards, including the American Institute of Physics Science Communication Award, and has been honored to have seven of his books launched into space: His astronomy textbook, The Cosmic Perspective, flew on the Space Shuttle Atlantis during the final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope in 2009, and his six children’s books are all currently aboard the International Space Station, where they have been read aloud by astronauts for the Story Time From Space program.

AUTHOR MISSION STATEMENT

Dr. Bennett’s personal mission is to contribute toward the goal of global education, promoting understanding of the relationship between humanity and the natural world. His approach to science education includes an emphasis on quantitative literacy, environmental education and space education.

In alignment with his mission, Dr. Bennett is involved with Story Time from Space, a project of the Global Space Education Foundation. Readings of his children’s books have been videotaped by astronauts in space and are available to view at www.storytimefromspace.com.
