Meet Marika Flatt

Marika Flatt spent 7 years growing another Austin-based book publicity firm right out of college and then left to found PR by the Book. Her passion lies in connecting people that can help each other, which makes her professional role ideal: connecting authors/experts with media who need them.

She’s been in book publicity for nearly two decades, and she is thrilled that PR by the Book will celebrate 15 years in the fall. Marika loves to travel and tell others about why they should, as the Travel Editor of Texas Lifestyle Magazine.

Genres She Loves to Promote

It’s always fun to promote books that align with one’s personal interests, so Marika loves to take on books related to travel, music, dancing, lifestyle, pop culture, nutrition, fitness, and fashion.

A Typical Day in the Life of Marika is…

Days are broken down with a mix of: reviewing potential clients, speaking to potential clients and creating their proposal, checking in on publicity campaigns and talking strategy with the publicists/ campaign managers, working on big-picture projects to keep PR by the Book ahead of the curve and preparing outreach to writers’ conferences as she is invited to speak around the country.

In the late afternoon, she turns into the mom of three very active kiddos.

Advice for Authors

There’s so much but for starters:

  1. Start planning early.
  2. Listen to the experts.
  3. Insist on a fantastic book cover; don’t settle. Go to the bookstore and pay attention to covers that really pop.
  4. Don’t snub media with a smaller audience; smaller doesn’t always equate to fewer book sales.
  5. Make sure your response time to your publicist is immediate (they could be working on a time-sensitive media opportunity) and respond to others within 24 hours.
