Pitch Boomerangs Back (a few years later)

POSTED BY prbythebook ON October 14, 2011

Clients may come and go, but our pitches remain (in the inboxes of media).

by Emily Southard-Bond

This past week, PR by the Book publicist Babs had a somewhat startling request. A pitch she had sent November 4th, 2007, for a book titled Building Personal Leadership came back to her.  A well-known editor once informed me she receives thousands of emails a day, an overwhelming amount for anyone to navigate through. The pitch that came back to Babs had been sent to Kem Balani the CEO and editor of Biz India, a business site with an emphasis on India’s commerce and lifestyle. Being somewhat surprised by the several year gap in response to the initial pitch, Babs asked Mr. Balani to provide some insight and like any good business man, he has some sound advice:

I realized a very long time ago the importance of saving every business card, and have continued that practice of saving people’s contact information. When emailing came along that frequency has grown tremendously. A contact can be worth millions of dollars. Emailing is now the primary mode of communication in business. If I do not save emails, I lose many opportunities.

In this technologically advanced society we so heavily depend on, Mr. Balani’s practice of saving every business card may seem antiquated to those of us with iPhone contacts syncing with our Google contacts, but it’s not. His methodical saving process is very sound and the mere practice of saving every contact, be it the tiny paper cards, to clearing out, re-organizing and re-evaluating emails has proven to be highly beneficial to Mr. Balani.  And, it should be noted– it is the quality of our pitches that still stand out.  Babs’ pitch, unlike those of from other publicity firms having their generic emails thrown into the digital trash, made the cut to being a worthy resource even several years later.

True, this response was certainly past the client’s time with us, but Babs still provided his information. At PR by the Book, we never really stop promoting our authors. We have a tendency to not only enjoy the work we represent, but feel responsible with the amount of trust a client gives us.  We like to think of your trust as a badge of honor; one we don’t take off.

Each publicist at PR by the Book prides themselves on their ability to match our experts with the appropriate contact, and because this is a world where your business card is no longer weighted on the merit of obscure eggshell shades, but on the name in a link, we’ll make sure you stand out—even 7 years later.
