What I’m Reading: Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight

One of my fellow Texas Book Festival committee members recommended Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight (Harper, April 2013). With her raving endorsement, I was anxious to dig into it and finally did on a press trip. I was thinking this was YA, but after I began reading it, realized its content is more suited for adults.
The two main characters are Kate, a single mom about the same age as me, and her 15-year old daughter, Amelia. Having a daughter myself, and knowing that the storyline follows Kate’s obsession with solving the mystery behind her daughter’s “apparent” suicide, I wasn’t sure it was content I wanted to pass the time with. A little heavy, you know.
However, McCreight (also a mom of daughters) does a great job of weaving an intriguing storyline, combining the passion of a working mom, with the often-neurotic personalities of teen girls. The reader is drawn into this mom’s fight for justice and is constantly trying to figure out the tangled lives of the many characters in Reconstrucing Amelia.
The content is not appropriate for younger teens (as it deals with topics of extreme bullying, sexual conduct, borderline pornography, hazing, and, of course, death); however, it’s a novel I think women will not want to put down.
McCreight became interested in the topic of cyber-bullying after hearing Huff Post report as many as 53% of teens are targets. This is such a scary stat as this novel points out, cyber-bullying can be fatal, and is so unnecessary.

Click: An Online Love Story by Lisa Becker

POSTED BY prbythebook ON December 4, 2012

By Marika Flatt I’m a sucker for a fun, breezy romance novel that gets me knee deep in a sweet romance between 20-40 something year olds. I came across this novel online and enjoyed reading it on a recent press trip. I started reading it on a Tuesday in Germany and was done by Thursday. […]
