Nashville on Ice! And why we still love your city.

POSTED BY stephanie ON December 15, 2010

We’re back in the saddle this morning after a few days in Nashville (“the other South”), where Marika and I were met with snow, ice and freezing temps, but plenty of warm smiles too.  Our 2-day trip coincided with the coldest, most wintery weather since 1942. Sounds like impeccable timing for a trip from balmy Austin, right?

We can’t complain too much though because we love Nashville — it’s a lot like our city in terms of local charm, but with more Honky Tonks and more regular brushes with country music megastars. And how could a  little afternoon visit to a snow-covered Franklin not warm your soul?

Like the Big Apple, we head to Nashville on a semi-regular basis to visit (on non-trade show time) with many of the great folks we have the pleasure of working with throughout the year. We cherish the opportunities to share a meal or a cup of coffee to talk what everyone is up to. Conversations revolved around what’s working, what’s going to be hot in the next few seasons, and what can we, as publicists, can do to make our jobs meet the needs of the 2011 author.

Just when it feels like not much changes in the publishing world, we hear from innovators working to change the game.  We’re inspired by the people behind new publishing start-ups  — like the ones branching off from blue chip publishing houses  — and challenged to take a look at how we can also do things differently.

For one, PR by the Book is now partnered with NetGalley –in fact, we’re the first publicity firm to join forces with NetGalley. We want to remind our publicist friends: the more unified we are in providing a green alternative to the number of disposable galley copies that we circulate (many of which find their fate in the garbage), the more receptive the media will (slowly) become in accepting a digital ARC. We have the power  to change this practice and to make publishing a more environmentally responsible industry.

We enjoyed visiting with a few of our Nashville-based authors like Christopher Cunningham, as well as book publicist colleagues Curt Harding and Heather Adams. One thing that came up in conversation: the gaping void in the area of speakers services for authors. Aside from traditional Speaker Bureaus, what options are available that we can provide to our clients?

We also got to visit with the amazing in-house publicists at Thomas Nelson and B&H Publishing about current and upcoming projects. We’re excited about what’s in store for everyone in the New Year.

Big thanks to everyone who braved the weather for us, and for all the wonderful Southern hospitality!

Death of the traditional mail-out? NetGalley continues to make news.

Death of the traditional mail-out? NetGalley continues to make news.

It’s faster, it’s greener, it’s more efficient and it’s the next logical step in the e-book phenomenon. NetGalley, a service that allows publishers to share digital content, made the news again today, signing a deal with Hachette Book Group to distribute the publisher’s advance review copies (ARCs) electronically. Hachette is the second of the big [...]
