Whirlwind trip to NY was foodie’s dream
POSTED BY elaine ON September 27, 2011
Earlier this month I was in NYC with our client Kari Underly – author of The Art of Beef Cutting – on what can only be described as a foodie’s dream trip. That may lead you to think we ate great food, right? Wrong! Did we hit up any hip restaurants? Nope. Visit the artisans in Chelsea Market? No time. Let me clarify – this trip was a foodie publicist’s dream that culminated in the test kitchens at bon appetit magazine, but left no time for fine dining.
The reason for the trip was that after weeks of pitching, planning and several date changes, Kari was set to appear on The Today Show! Kari, a third-generation butcher, did a segment with anchor Savannah Guthrie on how to talk to your butcher. It included tips on not being intimidated by the meat cutter behind the counter, better cuts for your budget and even how to do some of your own cutting. Kari is a natural and the segment was a great success! Watch it here. And here she is (in the purple) with the show’s food stylist getting everything ready before the segment. Look at all that beef!
We had less than 24 hours in NY, but were able to maximize our time with two additional stops. First was Food & Wine magazine where we met with food editor Daniel Gritzer. He was lovely (and knew a thing or two about meat cuts and bovine muscles already)! He and Kari chatted for about 45 minutes, brainstormed some ways they could work together and got in valuable face time. (No Gail Simmons sightings, though!)
The final stop was to the Conde Nast offices and bon appetit magazine. Editor Hunter Lewis had arranged for Kari to break down a veal breast in their test kitchen, interviewing her in the process. Apparently, veal is the meat that bon app readers are least familiar with, so Kari gave him all the details about how to cut and use veal meat. While Kari was cutting, there was a flurry of activity around us in the adjoining kitchens – and great smells, too, as you can imagine!
It was a whirlwind trip and both client and publicist went home exhausted, but very, very happy. Looking forward to the next trip to visit our media friends in NY!
