You can run, but you can’t hide much longer. E-readers are taking over.

POSTED BY elaine ON July 21, 2010

It was going to happen eventually….and those of us who are reluctant to follow the e-book trend will soon be left with little choice than to adopt the technically-savvy method of reading books. The New York Times reported yesterday that Amazon sales of books for the Kindle has topped those of hardcovers for three months now! This transition to e-readers is happening fast. In fact, Mike Shatzkin, founder and chief executive of the Idea Logical Company, predicts in the article that within a decade, fewer than 25 percent of all books sold will be print versions. Hard to imagine! What this means for authors is that creating an e-book will no longer be cutting edge, no longer optional.

The thought of reading all my books on a cold, hard screen is hard to swallow because what I really love is the smell of a new book, feeling the pages between my fingers as I’m curled up on the couch….in a Snuggie (don’t judge) and seeing my growing collection of literature on bookcases around the house. And I’m not alone. Fellow PR by the Book publicist, Tolly, can relate (see her recent post in which she reluctantly admits to wanting a Kindle). And most book lovers feel the same way, but as Shatzkin also implies in the article – Get Over It.

And so we will. E-reading is the exciting – and greener! – wave of the future and savvy authors and their equally savvy publicists will learn to embrace e-books in all their glory.
